With Consulting Director, Emily Gillmore

“The working world has evolved, and people have new non-negotiables when looking for a job.”

In today’s show, Elizabeth chats with Emily Gillmore, a Consulting Director at Gallagher who specialises in creating great employee experiences.

Previously, job title, salary, and perks were considered important factors when looking for a new job. However, the focus has shifted towards purpose, job value, how a job makes you feel, and the legacy you can leave behind. Purpose has become the driving force behind why people work. People are connected more than ever to the WHY behind their work, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Emily helps organisations of all sizes and sectors create an authentic and meaningful employee experience. The experience can vary widely depending on the company’s industry and size, but it’s about crafting a journey that connects with employees and makes them feel valued at work. Please listen in to learn more about this fascinating topic.

Notable Quotes

  • Having a great CEO who can passionately communicate the company’s mission in a big town hall is one thing. However, having a story that resonates with your leaders and employees at all levels is even more important. When your leaders truly internalize the story and make it their own, they can relay it with authenticity and purpose to their teams. This is because the story has become a part of their lived experience, and they genuinely believe in it.
  • The leadership team may have goals of achieving organic growth, expanding into new territories, and reducing employee turnover. However, it’s not enough to list abstract values such as ‘being brave’ or ‘excited to come to work.’ It’s crucial to weave these values into a compelling story that connects with each employee’s daily work experience.
  • To end maternity discrimination, the message needs to come from the top. This involves modelling the desired behaviour, such as giving returning mothers airtime to share their experiences, providing mentoring and support in a visible way, and acknowledging the challenges that working mothers face as they juggle their responsibilities. By doing so, we can demonstrate that taking time off for maternity leave does not have to mean the end of a woman’s career and that personal choice is valued and respected.
  • I believe that flexible work arrangements, including working from home, have had a significant positive impact on women and contributed to progress toward gender equality. I believe mandating a full-time return to the office for everyone is not the right approach.
