Description
Business Development & Client Engagement Lead
Part-Time - 10-15 hours per week | Remote | Flexible Hours | Term-Time Working Available | £35,000-£40,000 FTE + Commission
Imagine a B2B sales role you could genuinely fit around your life.
10-15 hours a week.
Work from home.
Flexibility over when you work those hours.
And even the option to work term-time only.
But with real responsibility for helping grow an ambitious business.
Not Rhinos is a growing leadership development consultancy helping great organisations develop great people.
Until now, much of our growth has come through word of mouth, recommendations and the relationships we've built.
We're ready to change that.
We're looking for an experienced Business Development & Client Engagement Lead to help us proactively reach more of the organisations that could benefit from what we do.
This is a brand-new role with genuine ownership - and an opportunity to build our business development approach from the ground up.
About Elephants Not Rhinos
At Elephants Not Rhinos, we help great organisations develop great people.
Founded by husband-and-wife team Craig and Alex, we work with organisations to help their leaders, teams and people perform at their best.
And nothing we do is off the shelf.
We take the time to understand each organisation - its culture, challenges, people and ambitions - before designing practical, engaging development that makes a genuine difference.
Our work ranges from six-month leadership programmes to individual team development days, senior leadership strategy sessions and L&D consultancy.
Craig brings more than 20 years' experience in learning and development, including senior leadership roles, while Alex brings 15 years' experience in education.
Together, we bring different perspectives and complementary strengths to our work.
But what really matters to us is what happens after the training.
How do leaders think, behave and communicate differently?
Do teams work better together?
Does the organisation perform better as a result?
That's why we aim to become trusted partners to our clients - not simply another training provider.
The Opportunity
We're great at designing and delivering leadership development.
Now we need someone who's great at opening doors.
You'll take ownership of lead generation and initial client engagement - identifying organisations we should be speaking to, finding the right decision-makers and starting meaningful conversations.
Our ideal clients are typically organisations with around 150-800 employees, and we've worked across sectors including professional services, charities, healthcare, financial services, fintech and care.
We're currently particularly interested in developing relationships within the architecture and engineering sectors.
You'll research prospects.
Connect through LinkedIn.
Write targeted emails.
Pick up the phone.
Attend relevant networking events and conferences where appropriate.
And start conversations with senior decision-makers about the leadership and people challenges within their organisations.
This is proactive business development, so you need to be comfortable with cold outreach.
But we're not interested in firing out hundreds of generic messages.
Our services are bespoke. Selling them requires curiosity, credibility and trust.
We want thoughtful, insight-led prospecting that starts the right conversations with the right organisations.
From First Conversation to Qualified Opportunity
An important part of your role will be understanding whether there's a genuine fit between a prospective client and Elephants Not Rhinos.
You'll hold initial conversations to understand their organisation, challenges and priorities.
When you've identified a strong opportunity, you'll help move that prospect towards one of our 90-minute scoping sessions - something we call an Unpacking the Trunk session.
These sessions allow us to really understand what's happening within an organisation and explore how we might be able to help.
Craig and Alex will then take the lead on developing the solution and converting the opportunity.
So you won't be expected to do everything.
Your expertise is creating and qualifying the opportunities that allow them to do what they do best.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll be:
✔ Researching target organisations, sectors and decision-makers
✔ Generating new B2B opportunities through LinkedIn, email, telephone and networking
✔ Developing targeted, personalised approaches rather than relying on generic outreach
✔ Holding initial exploratory conversations with prospective clients
✔ Understanding organisations' leadership, team and people-development challenges
✔ Qualifying opportunities based on fit, need and engagement potential
✔ Building relationships with prospects over time
✔ Arranging and attending qualified discovery meetings with the Directors
✔ Managing follow-up activity across your pipeline
✔ Keeping CRM records accurate and up to date
✔ Building clear processes for active, warm and longer-term prospects
✔ Working directly with Craig and Alex to refine messaging and targeting
✔ Sharing insights on what's resonating with prospective clients
✔ Helping develop the systems and processes that will underpin business development as we grow
There may also be opportunities to attend relevant conferences and networking events.
We'd Love to Hear From You If...
You're a B2B salesperson who understands that selling a bespoke professional service is very different from selling an off-the-shelf product.
You know how to build credibility.
You ask good questions.
You listen.
And you're confident enough to pick up the phone and start a conversation with a senior decision-maker you've never spoken to before.
You'll ideally have:
✔ Demonstrable B2B sales, business development or lead generation experience
✔ Experience selling professional services or another consultative B2B offering
✔ A track record of meeting or exceeding commercial targets
✔ Confidence with outbound prospecting across telephone, LinkedIn and email
✔ Excellent relationship-building and communication skills
✔ The credibility to engage senior business decision-makers
✔ Strong research and prospecting skills
✔ Experience using a CRM to manage pipeline and sales activity
✔ A commercial, strategic and solutions-focused mindset
✔ The self-motivation to work independently and manage your own activity
✔ The confidence to help create processes rather than simply follow an established sales playbook
Experience in leadership development, L&D, or training would be useful but isn't essential.
Experience working within or alongside a growing SME would also be valuable.
Flexibility That Actually Means Flexibility
We know that talented, experienced people don't necessarily want - or need - a traditional five-day working week.
This role is designed to offer genuine flexibility.
✨ 10-15 hours per week
✨ Predominantly home-based
✨ Flexibility over when you work your hours
✨ Term-time working can be considered
✨ £35,000-£40,000 FTE, depending on experience
✨ Commission in addition to your base salary
There may occasionally be travel for client meetings, networking events or conferences, but the day-to-day role will be remote.
You'll work independently while staying closely connected to Craig and Alex.
What matters to us is that you're able to deliver consistent, high-quality business development activity and build relationships - not that you're sitting at a desk between arbitrary hours.
Why Elephants Not Rhinos?
We're small enough that your contribution will genuinely matter.
This isn't a role where you'll become salesperson number 47 in a huge commercial team.
You'll be our first dedicated business development hire.
You'll work directly with our founders.
You'll have the opportunity to shape how we approach sales.
You'll see the impact of the opportunities you create.
And you'll be helping sell something designed to make a genuine difference to people, teams and organisations.
We're ambitious about what Elephants Not Rhinos can become.
But as we grow, we want to hold onto what matters - delivering outstanding work, building strong relationships, and genuinely helping people be at their best.
