It takes many forms, including firing a woman for getting pregnant, not hiring a pregnant woman, or giving her a promotion because she has a child. It can also involve taking away job responsibilities when an employee is pregnant and refusing to offer reasonable accommodations to help expectant mothers do their jobs. As a pregnant woman or new mum, you must understand your rights to stand up for them if necessary.

- You must write to your employer to notify them that you are pregnant.
- Working from home shouldn’t make any difference to your pregnancy leave.
- All employees are entitled to maternity leave, which is distinct from maternity pay, and that’s 52 weeks.
- Women on maternity leave or who are pregnant have the same right to be consulted. And to go through that redundancy process, as anyone else does.
- You have a right to return to the same job. But if it’s not reasonable or practical, your employer has to offer you an alternative job.
